THE AMOKE FOUNDATION
GLOBAL VIRTUAL LAUNCH
August 18th 3.00 - 4.00 pm (WAT)
The Amoke Foundation is a charitable non-profit organization set up in memory of Dr. Yemisi Adetunji-Badejo, who passed away due to complications from sickle cell disease (SCD). She dedicated her life to helping others, and our charity is passionate about continuing that drive by focusing on improving the livelihood of those living with the hereditary blood disorder SCD.
Background
Sickle cell disease is a public health priority and a neglected health problem in sub-Saharan Africa, which carries approximately 80% of the global disease burden. The disease takes a heavy toll on children: it is estimated that approximately 1000 children in Africa are born with sickle cell disease every day and more than half will die before they reach the age of five.
Amoke Foundations aim is to develop a network of Pain Management Hubs (PMH) by collaborating with teaching hospitals and bio-pharmaceuticals to improve awareness of new treatment and protocols. Patients with sickle cell will be able to attend the day clinic and access the services provided at zero cost to them. The Foundation will also sponsor training and education of specialist SCD care nurses and other related healthcare workers.
The first of these hubs in Sub-Saharan Africa is located in University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, Oyo state.
